Student awarded prestigious scholarship
An Aston University student has won a prestigious scholarship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) to work on a joint project between the Aston CRISIS Centre and the Disaster Prevention Research Institute at Kyoto University. Gary Preece will travel to Japan and work closely with Japanese academics for four months to look at ways to improve the sharing of critical information in response to major disasters in Japan and around the world.
Gary, who is currently in the final year of his PhD in Management at Aston University, said "this scholarship provides me with a fantastic opportunity to conduct an exciting and valuable piece of research in Japan, whilst gaining experience of living and working in a totally different culture". Professor Duncan Shaw, Aston CRISIS Centre Director, said "We're very proud of Gary and delighted that his very innovative idea made such a strong research proposal to enhance emergency preparedness. It presents an excellent opportunity for developing the strong links between our research centres and we look forward to this fruitful collaboration."
