The United Kingdom has experienced a significant number of large-scale flooding events, but research suggests that is has the second-lowest mortality rate in Europe. At a conference hosted by the Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in Cambridge on 29 September 2010, delegates heard how Britain can continue to keep the population safe from major flooding events. Representing the Aston CRISIS Centre, Prof Duncan Shaw delivered a keynote address which detailed the findings from the ERGO project on preparing for mass evacuation.

Held at the University of Cambridge the one-day event attracted 150 participants from across the UK, with other keynote speakers from across Europe, including France, the Netherlands and Iceland. Speakers also addressed mass evacuation plans, crisis management issues related to floods, and how to deal with an Atlantic storm as well as the evacuation from volcanic water flows.
