Dr. Gary Preece has travelled to Japan to begin a 4-month research collaboration between the Aston CRISIS Centre and the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) at Kyoto University. During this collaborative project, Dr. Preece is working closely with Japanese academics to look at ways to improve the sharing of critical information in response to major disasters in Japan and around the world.

Dr. Preece is using a method known as viable systems modelling (VSM) to develop a systematic approach to guide the critical information sharing necessary to respond effectively to major disasters. The research will explore the viability of conducting VSM analysis in this area and, drawing upon the DPRI’s vast knowledge of Japanese disaster response programmes, seek to identify ways to improve the Japanese national response to disasters.

His work is funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
