Prof. Duncan Shaw (ABS) and Neil Blundell (ONR) presented the results from research conducted in cooperation with the UK’s Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR) at a technical meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna last week. The presentation focused on a decision-making methodology they have developed to minimize waste and improve plant safety. The key principles defined in the presentation were identified as a valuable new approach to waste management thinking, were adopted by the meeting and are to be translated into the guidance “IAEA Safety Standards - DS284 Safety Case and Safety Assessment for Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste”. The methodology is to be presented at future IAEA technical meetings, aiming to feed into other Predisposal Safety Guides (DS447 & DS448).
