This Department for Transport funded project was a large collaboration in a £1.5M project undertaking a fundamental review of security search at UK airports.

Project aims

A multi-disciplinary approach to all aspects of the airport passenger search process

  • Enable UK airports to achieve the best level of efficiency whilst retaining security
  • Workstreams in ergonomics, workplace design, culture and workload
  • Outputs must be implementable at all UK airports

Security Culture

The scope of this workstream was to develop a security culture assessment methodology for aviation security checkpoints that can be used by the industry to help recognise and address latent issues relating to Security Officer performance.

The output from the workstream is applicable to operations at the aviation security passenger checkpoint (also know as central search) and at this stage do not extend to other areas such as hold baggage and cargo security screening.

Results

  1. Validated tool for measurement of security culture
  2. Application of the tool online and paper
  3. Allows benchmarking between sites and sub-sections of airports
