Through experiences worldwide there is a increasingly awareness of the importance of protecting vulnerable people from disasters. Along with mitigation measures, authorities must develop preparedness and response plans to aid people affected by disasters, but the scarcity of resources on several countries makes it a highly challenging task.

Within this project the case of floods in Mexico is studied, looking to develop a decision-support system able to aid the decision-making regarding preparedness and response, using a combination of optimization and geographical information systems.

Description

The number and intensity of floods is a very concerning issue in Mexico, especially in states such as Tabasco, Chiapas, Veracruz, among others. Thus, it is crucial to protect vulnerable people using the resources available efficiently seeking to decrease the damage induced by floods.

The present project is develop to improve decision-making in two phases: preparedness and response. The system is designed to provide support for location decisions (shelters and distribution centers), pre-positioning and distribution using a combination of optimization and a geographical information system, aiming for a comprehensive tool suitable for the Mexican context.

Objective

Develop a decision-support system for decision-making to improve the activities currently performed in Mexico in the case of floods.
